Château de Beynac

In addition to its food and its prehistoric sites, Périgord Noir is renowned for its many châteaux. About ten kilometres from Sarlat stands one of the prettiest and very well preserved, strongholds in the region, Beynac château. Perched on a rock peak, it towers over the Dordogne river and the houses with slate roofs and white facades in Beynac-et-Cazenas, one of the prettiest villages in France.

During your visit, you are told the story of this fortress built by Adhémar de Beynac in the 12th century, including famous characters such as Aliénor d’Aquitaine, Richard the Lionheart and even Simon de Montfort. From the top of the tower in Beynac château, admire the lovely landscape below with another of the châteaux in Périgord Noir, Castelnaud, on the other side of the Dordogne.
